The Pocket Guide to Moving Chapter 4: Settling In by Nest & Castle December 7, 2020December 10, 2020 December 7, 2020December 10, 2020 Unpacking It will likely take a few days to fully unpack your belongings and set up your new home. When you first arrive in your new home, setup your bedrooms, children’s rooms, and areas for your pets first. By setting up these areas first, you have the option to call it quits and finish unpacking tomorrow if you are too tired – after all, moving is a draining and tiring process! Take photos of your new rented home If you are renting your new home, ensure you take photos of the condition the home is in before unpacking. Document any damage, markings on flooring and walls, etc. Ensure your photos are dated and time-stamped. Store these documents and photos in a safe place and send a copy of them to your landlord or property management for their own records. By taking the time to conduct your own initial inspection and documenting any damages, you can avoid having any extra charges for damages that were not your fault when you move out. Get to know your new neighbours Take the time to introduce yourself to your neighbours and other residents in your neighbourhood. These valuable relationships can help you settle into the neighbourhood faster. They are also a great way to gather recommendations for good schools, doctors, local restaurants, and other neighbourhood amenities.
