New Construction NewsMarket InsightsMarket Stats by Nest & Castle August 15, 2019December 3, 2020 August 15, 2019December 3, 2020 Canada Building Permits Unexpectedly Fall 3.7% The value of building permits in Canada declined 3.7 percent from a year ago to CAD 8.0 billion in June 2019, following a downwardly revised 12.2 percent slump in the prior month and against market expectations of a 1.5 percent rise. The value of residential permits fell 3.1 percent to CAD 4.9 billion, due to the multi-family dwelling (-6.7 percent to CAD 2.6 billion), mostly in Quebec; while the single-family dwelling permits rose (1.3 percent to CAD 2.3 billion). Also, the value of permits for non-residential buildings slid 4.6 percent to CAD 3.1 billion, mainly due to commercial (-1.1 percent to CAD 1.9 billion) and institutional permits (-17.4 percent to CAD 0.7 billion). Conversely, industrial permits rose (1.7 percent to CAD 0.6 billion). In the second quarter of the year, total value of building permits grew 4.1 percent over a year ago to CAD 25.8 billion.
